Start Small: The Easiest Win in Decluttering

Decluttering can feel like an overwhelming task, especially for those of us whose method for tackling clutter involves a "doom bag".
There are clear, manageable steps you can take to systematically declutter your space and even after completing just a few of them, you’ll begin to see real results. So grab your camera to take a before picture and prepare to amaze yourself!
Step One: Start with the Trash
I recommend getting started with the easiest win: the trash.
I’m talking about the truly obvious stuff—broken things, expired items, empty packaging, dried-out pens, torn bags, old receipts, food wrappers, and anything else that clearly doesn’t serve a purpose anymore. You know it when you see it.
This first step is beautifully simple and low-stakes—it doesn’t ask for emotional decision-making or deep reflection. It just asks you to grab a trash bag (and maybe some sturdy gloves) and get moving.
Why start here?
To builds momentum.
It clears visual noise.
You'll get a quick win and a burst of clarity.
Shortly after this step, you’ll start to see your space differently. A cleared surface or an emptied drawer can feel like a fresh breath of air. I always like to take a step back and look at it lovingly.
A quick note:
If you pause and wonder, “Is this trash?”—then it probably isn’t. Set that item aside for a later step involving donation bins, “maybe” boxes, or buy-nothing groups.
If you notice feelings of guilt, overthinking, or the “what if I need it someday” spiral—breathe. Just set the item aside for now. This step is only about what is clearly trash.
This is a time for motion. For clearing. For lightening your load.
If this step still feels tough, try:
Starting in an area where you have fewer emotional ties.
Inviting a trusted friend to work alongside you.
Hiring a supportive professional to walk you through the process.
Grab your bag. Get your gloves (for bravery). Turn on your favorite playlist or podcast.
Start with what’s obvious.
Begin your upward spiral!
